Bloodstone is an opaque green jasper with spashes of bright red. It is known as "heliotrope."
The bright red spashes are caused by the presence of iron and are the reason that the
material is called "bloodstone."
In addition to red splashes, some bloodstone has splashes of yellow, white and other colors.
However, the most desirable specimens are dark green with red splashes in dramatic contrast. Specimens
with bright yellow splashes are called "plasma".

traditional producer of bloodstone, however, good quality bloodstone is also produced in

A popular use of bloodstone is in men's rings where it is often set as a
low-relief cabochon. Bloodstone is the Zodic gem for Aries and was historically used as a birthstone
for March.
Bloodstone is often tumbled or cut into beads and cabochons. These are used in a
variety of jewelry such as rings, pendants, necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
